Lucky Charms and You

Posted in Basic Raiding 101 on June 9, 2009 by spydermenace

Kill order is often an important aspect of raiding and there is always much discussion about what to kill first in a pull. To that end, Blizzard implemented a serious of marks commonly and lovingly referred to as “lucky charms”. However, like all great and simple systems of management, there is much dissent over how they are used. This is a brief explanation of the marks and the best ways to use them.

Skull: Kill target. This will be the first mob killed in a pull.

X: 2nd kill target. This will be off-tanked until the skull is dead.

Square: 3rd kill target. This can be off-tanked or CC (crowd control) until a tank can get to it. Usually a hunter trap.

Star: Usually a sap, if available. In that case it will be an early kill target. Also used as a sheep or banish depending on the circumstances.

Moon: Usually a sheep. Often saved till last due to AoE nature of a mob or a whirlwind ability. Using a sheep can keep the mob permanently CC’d through the course of a pull.

Circle: This mark varies based on the raid make-up but will usually be a sheep or a banish depending. Again, a later kill target once the rest of the pull is dead.

Diamond: Again, a varied mark. Often used for a banish depending on the pull.

Triangle: Not to sound like a broken record, but also a varied mark. Sap, sheep, banish.

Introduction and Greeting

Hello and salutations! If you’re reading this, you’ve found my blog. I welcome you to browse the limited nature of it currently. It will be a work-in-progress over the coming weeks as I get it up and running. Lets clear a few things up at the start. I’m not a professional by any means. Any opinions found herein are 100% my own and don’t reflect on anyone or anything outside of this blog. Any references I might link are property of those who wrote them. That all out of the way, let me welcome you once more to my blog.

The purpose here will be to explore some of the aspects of World of Warcraft (here-after referred to as WoW) from a healing-based perspective. My friend Ciderhelm, the administrator of tankspot.com, does phenomenal work crafting videos explaining encounter mechanics and strategies to successfully conquer said encounters.  However, he is a tank and his comments rarely touch on the healing aspect of boss fights. That is something I would like to do here. I’m unsure at the moment if I’ll be able to produce videos, but certainly will do my best to explain encounters from a healing perspective (through various classes as well, but starting with a druid and a shaman).

Once more, please read and enjoy. I’d love to see comments and suggestions as no one is 100% right and all strategies and ideas can be bettered by creative players and theorycrafters. All the best.
